My favourite Disney Characters - Herc's Page

When I was doing my first few Disney pages, I had finished Meg's and Clopins Page and started with Frollo's and Terk's, I realized it was also time for a hero. But what's a hero at all? Then you must ask the hero's hero, in the quest of being hero and becoming hero...Hercules!

What is it about Herc that makes his story amazing?
Being the son of Mt Olympus' boss, Zeus, and a god according to the lineage at first, everyone wants him: Hades wants him dead, Zeus and Hera want him back home, Amphytryon and Alcmene (his foster parents) want him safe, and Meg also wants him, even if she denies it.

When Baby Hercules is born, he is a sharp thorn in Hades' ruthless plan to take over Mt Olympus. Now, how do you kill a god? In three easy steps: 1. bring him down to earth. 2. make him mortal with a potion. 3. kill him! But Pain and Panic, Hades' henchmen, fail badly (who'd have thought...) They made him mortal, in fact, but since he did not drink the last drop of the potion, he still retained his godlike strength and is found and adopted by two humans, Alcmene and Amphytryon. Many years pass, and in the age of, I'd guess, 14, he goes through a lot of identity crisis cause he can't control his strength. Everyone calls him a freak cause whatever he wants to help with goes horribly wrong. Not knowing he is a god in truth, the only wishes he has are being like anyone else and finally knowing where he belongs and who he is.

That's when Alcmene and Amphytryon finally tell him that he was abandoned. Herc makes his way to the big Zeus' temple and meets his father there. Now he at least has a task to do: To come back on Mount Olympus, he has to prove he is a true hero. On the back of Pegasus, an old friend from child days, he flies over to a mysterious island. There he meets his trainor, a hot-tempered satyr named Philoctetes (Call him Phil) Phil teaches him how to control his strength, beat monsters, rescue damsels in distress, heroic stuff, you know. You can't exactly tell how long he stays on the island, but I'd guess two, three, years. Finally grown up, Phil journeys to Thebes with him, and  a short stop to rescue a damsel in distress becomes more important than he'd thought, because Meg steps into his life. To him, she's something....for Phil she a catastrophe, but he can't keep Herc from falling hopelessy in love.

Meanwhile Herc really becomes the most famous person in Greek, everyone knows him and buys his merchandise (the great comedy is one reason I love the movie), he made his way and thinks he is entitled to Mt Olympus, hell, he is an action figure! But then he must face that being famous is not the same as being a true hero. Zeus tells him that the real reason for being a hero is in his heart, and then leaves him alone. That's the point where Herc nearly gives up and Phil barely encourages him.

Hades, for sure, would prefer if he'd give up, or shoot something at him! It seems that he is perfect and has no weaknesses, and he could explode at him...until he finally gets it: Herc's weakness is Meg...

That's when he does a deal with Herc. Hades tells him that Meg's his prisoness. Herc, of course, wants to break her free. That's the deal: If he can give up his strength for the next 24 hours, Meg will be free. A smooth deal, as long as there's no harm to Meg in the 24 hours. That's an important thing: Cause when a pillar nearly falls onto Herc, Meg quickly pushes him away, and instead the pillar lands on Meg. Herc tries to get the pillar off her..and magically gets his strength back. Now he can fight Hades, but Meg is in grave danger...

Top Ten Hercules quotes and dialogues:
10: Herc: I-I don't understand. If you are my father, that would make me a-- Zeus: A god. Herc: *calmly* A god. *hysterically* A GOD!!
9: Phil: Kid, kid, kid! How many horns do you see? Herc: Err..six?
8. Meg: What are you doing? Without your strength you will be killed! Herc: There are worse things...
7: What's happening?
6: *standing on Cerberus like a memorial* WHERE IS MEG?
5: Just like Phil told me, I analyzed the situation, controlled my strength and kicked! The crowds went wild! Thank you, thank you.
4: Did you see that?? Next stop, Olympus!
3: But father, I've beaten every single monster I've come up against. I'm-I'm the most famous person in all of Greece. I'm-I'm an action figure!
2: Aw, how can I come down there when I'm feeling so UP??
1: You like making deals. Take me in Meg's place. Hades: Oh, well. The son of my hated rival trapped forever in a river of death. Herc: Going once! Hades: Hmm. Is there a downside to this? Herc: Going twice! Hades: Okay, okay, okay, okay. You get her out. She goes - you stay.

One Word to discribe Herc: UNSURE.

I had to think a long time till I finally decided which hero gets which place in my heart. The choice is hard, really, because, allthough there are not as many heroes as there are heroines, the present heroes are all wonderful in their way. There's Simba, and Quasimodo, and Shang, and Aladdin, and Tarzan, and...boy! But I finally realized Herc is my alltime favourite hero. The third time a Hercules-character gets the first place for me! Weird, huh?  I love Herc's character and his voice in the german version (It's Till Schweiger, a famous actor, and in my opinion they couldn't pick the voice any better) Hercules is one of my favourite Disney features at all, and every character somehow has a place in my favourites.
