The Little Mermaid
Listen, maybe that's not important, but oh well. Of course, there was also a German Version of the wonderful film "The Little Mermaid", and it got one of my alltime-favourite films. When it was released, in 89, I was very young, three or four years old. So I still call it the film of my young dreamy days. I'm still dreamy though, don't forget. But after some time a friend of mine borrowed the film, she never gave it back. And so I waited year for year, but the film wasn't released anymore, and I couldn't find it in any video store. My film! 98, I was..13 or 14, I saw a trailer that The little Mermaid would be released in Germany once more. I was happy, happy, happy, but that didn't go for long. There were new voices and the film was translated fully new. A part of the magic was drifted away. But when my 15th birthday was coming nearer, a good friend of mine organized that I got the german original again for myself. And then I got it, and this time I was SO happy! The old dialogues, the translated songs..I sang till I got a sore throat. Well, it occured to me that I could hear and sing the English songs once again. That time I was still working on the AoB part of my lyrics site, and it wasn't even finished, yet I made a short break to write the lyrics to The Little Mermaid down.
Part of your World
Under the Sea
Poor unfortunate souls
Kiss the Girl
Les Poissons
Part of your world
My comment: This is the beautiful song that tells the story all the way, and if you love the film you love the song. Attention: Who watched "The little mermaid 2"? The film is ok, but one thing catched my ear. At the end when all the names and voice talents are showed of, a song plays, Part of your world from the first film. But it's something about that one, a new more soul-like and such rythm, and a new voice if I got it right. I fell in love with the new rythm, and the new version, and I pushed the "Rewind" button over and over to hear it again. I searched for the song everywhere, who can tell me where I can get it to hear it without watching the movie, or strain the video through rewind?
Look at this stuff
Isn't it neat?
Wouldn't you think my collection's complete?
Wouldn't you think I'm the girl
The girl who has everything?
Look at this trove
Treasures untold
How many wonders can one cavern hold?
Lookin' around here you'd think
Sure, she's got everything
I've got gadgets and gizmos aplenty
I've got whozits and whatzits galore
You want thingabobobs? I got twenty
But who cares?
No big deal
I want more...
I wanna be where the people are
I wanna see, wanna see 'em dancing
Walking around on those (what d'ya call 'em? Oh) feet
Flippin your fins you don't get too far
Legs are required for jumpin', dancin'
Strolling along down a
(What's that word again?) street
Up where they walk
Up where they run
Up where they stay all day in the sun
Wandering free
Wish I could be
Part of that world
What would I give
If I could live out of these waters?
What would I pay
To spend a day warm on the sand?
Betcha on land they'd understand
Bet they don't reprimand their daughters
Bright young women
Sick of swimmin'! Ready to stand
And ready to know what the people know
Ask 'em my questions and get some answers
What's a fire? And why does it
(What's the word?) burn?
When's it my turn?
Wouldn't I love, love to explore that shore above?
Out of the sea
Wish I could be
Part of that world
Under the Sea
My comment: This was the song TLM got an Oscar for. The song and even the german translation is pretty funny, especially when you're singing it. Also, there's a bit of reggae I got a crush on as you know. The english singing voice of Sebastian, the one with the caribbean accent..I think Samuel E. Wright is his name. It's quite freaky!
The seaweed is always greener
In somebody elses lake
You dream about going up there
But that is a big mistake
Just look at the world around you
Right here on the ocean floor!
Such wonderful things surround you
What more is you lookin' for?
Under the sea
Under the sea
Darling, it's better
Down where it's wetter
Take it from me!
Up on the shore they work all day
Out in the sun they slave away
While we devotin'
Full time to floatin'
Under the sea
Down here all the fish is happy
As off through the waves they roll
The fish on the land ain't happy
They sad cause they're in their bowl
But fish in the bowl is lucky
They're in for a worser fate
One day when the boss get hungry
Guess who's gon' be on the plate!
Under the sea
Under the sea
Nobody beat us
Fry us and eat us
In fricassee
We what the land folks loves to cook
Under the sea we're off the hook
We got no troubles
Life is the bubbles
Under the sea
Under the sea
Since life is sweet here
We got the beat here
Naturally
Even the sturgeon an' the ray
They get the urge an' start to play
We got the spirit
You got to hear it
Under the sea
The newt play the flute
The carp play the harp
The plaice play the bass
And they soundin' sharp
The bass play the brass
The chup play the tub
The fluke is the duke of soul (Yeah!)
The ray he can play
The lings on the strings
The trout rockin' out
The blackfish she sings
The smelt and the sprat
They know where it's at
An' oh that blowfish blow
Under the sea
Under the sea
When the sardine begin to beguine
It's music to me
What do they got? Alot of sand
We got a hot crustacean band
Each little clam here
Know how to jam here
Under the sea
Each little slug here
Cuttin' a rug here
Under the sea
Each little snail here
Know how to wail here
That's why it's hotter
Under the water
Ya, we in luck here
Down in the muck here
Under the sea

Poor unfortunate souls
My comment: Ursulas song, and strangely I don't know when was the last time I laughed so much about a badguys song. It's just..strange funny, both english and german (the translators did great)
I admit that in the past I've been a nasty
They weren't kidding when they called me, well, a witch
But you'll find that nowadays
I've mended all my ways
Repented, seen the light and made a switch
True? Yes
And I fortunately know a little magic
It's a talent that I always have possessed
And here lately, please don't laugh!
I use it on behalf
Of the miserably, lonely and depressed
Pathetic
Poor unfortunate souls
In pain, in need
This one longing to be thinner
That one wants to get the girl
And do I help them? Yes, indeed!
Those poor unfortunate souls
So sad, so true
They come flocking to my cauldron
Crying "Spells, Ursula, please!"
And I help them? Yes I do
Now it's happened once or twice
Someone couldn't pay the price
And I'm afraid I had to rake 'em 'cross the coals
Yes, I've had the odd complaint
But on the whole I've been a saint
To those poor unfortunate souls
(Dialogue part)
"Have we got a deal?"
"If I become human, I'll never be with my father or sisters again"
"But you'll have your man..life is full of tough choices, innit? Oh! And there is one more thing. We haven't discussed the subject of payment."
"But I don't have..."
"I'm not asking much. Just a token, really a trifle! What I want from you is your voice"
"But without my voice, how can I..."
"You'll have your looks! Your pretty face! And don't underestimate the importance of body language! Ha!"
The man up there don't like a lot of blabber
They think a girl who gossips is a bore!
Yes, on land it's much prefered
For ladies not to say a word
And after all dear, what is idle prattle for?
Come on, they're not all that impressed with conversation
True gentlemen avoid it when they can
But they dote and swoon and fawn
On a lady who's withdrawn
It's she who holds her tongue who gets her man, come on!
You poor unfortunate soul!
Go ahead! Make your choice!
I'm a very busy woman and I haven't got all day
It won't cost much, just your voice!
You poor unfortunate soul!
It's sad but true
If you want to cross the bridge, my sweet
You've got to pay the toll
Take a gulp and take a breath and go ahead and sign the scroll!
Flotsam, Jetsam, now I've got her, boys!
The boss in on the roll!
This poor unfortunate soul

Kiss the Girl
My comment: I read SOMEWHERE that originally "Kiss the Girl" was nominated for the best-song Oscar, but "Under the sea" got it after all. I'm still puzzling about this, but I think both songs are worth an oscar, am I right? Once again, with this cool Samuel Wright, there comes a bit of reggae feeling and also romantic
There you see her
Sitting there across the way
She don't got alot to say
But there's something about her
And you don't know why, but you're dying to try
You wanna kiss the girl
Yes, you want her
Look at her, you know you do
Possible she wants you too
There is one way to ask her
It don't take a word
Not a single word
Go on and kiss the girl
Shalalalalala, my oh my
Look like the boy too shy
Ain't gonna kiss the girl
Shalalalalala, ain't that sad?
Ain't it a shame?
Too bad
He gonna miss the girl
Now's your moment
Floating in a blue lagoon
Boy, you better do it soon
No time will be better
She don't say a word
And she won't say a word
Until you kiss the girl
Shalalalalala, don't be scared
You've got the moon prepared
Go on and kiss the girl
Shalalalalala, don't stop now
Don't try to hide it how
You wanna kiss the girl
Shalalalalala, float along
And listen to the song
The song say: Kiss the girl!
Shalalalalala, the music play
Do what the music say
You got to kiss the girl
You've got to kiss the girl
You wanna kiss the girl
You've gotta kiss the girl
Go on and kiss the girl

Les Poissons
My comment: This is a great fun song sung by a french cook who's stuck with fish and crabs. If you can laugh about fishcooking in a mermaid film, but come on, it's funny. Sing, laugh, or better both!
Les poissons
Les poissons
How I love les poissons
Love to chop and to serve little fish
First I cut of their heads
Then I pull out the bones
Ah mais oui, ca c'est toujour delish
Les poissons
Les poissons
Heh heh heh
Hahaha
With the cleaver I hack them in two
I pull out what's inside
And I serve it up fried
God, I love little fishes
Don't you?
Here's something for tempting the palate
Prepared in the classic technique
First you pound the fish flat with a mallet
Then you slash through the skin
Give the belly a slice
Then you rub some salt in
Cause that makes it taste nice
(Zut alors, I have missed one!)
Sacre bleu, what is this?
How on earth could I miss
Such a sweet little succulent crab?
Quel dommage, what a loss! Here we go in the sauce
Now some flour, I think
Just a dab
Now I stuff you with bread
It don't hurt cause you're dead
And you're certainly lucky you are
Cause it's gonna be hot
In my big silver pot
Toodle loo, mon poisson
Au revoir!

The Little Mermaid 2 - Return to the sea
My comment: OK, so all in all the sequel is very weak (as many Disney sequels) but I fell in love with that song below. Some corner in my head was called up when I heard the text and watched Melody swimming. When I finally got the english original of the song (THANKS SO MUCH CARLA!) I heard it over and over (and I still hear it over and over) and sung my throat sore. I screamed it, every line of Melody's. Dear people who love to put critic on films, after all this somg is great!
For a Moment
Melody:
OK, get a grip! Get a hang on this flipper
It's like slipping two feet into one big huge slipper
This way is left, but which way is right?
Well, now I'll be circling in circles all night
I can't believe I can do this and more
To swim in the sea like I walk on the shore
Out of my shell, not closed up like a clam
Look out, sea! This is me! Here I am!
For a moment all of me
Is alive and at home in the sea
I'm swirling and twirling so graceful and grand
Not stubbing my toes getting stuck in the sand!
For a moment life is cool
I'm a slash in the worlds biggest pool
This is more than my thoughts ever thought it could be
For a moment
Just a moment
Lucky me!
Ariel:
If only for one moment
I had shared with you all I know
The sea wouldn't be a mystery
Oh, why did you have to go?
Melody:
Everything's newer and brighter and bluer
And truer to life than before!
Watch me soar...
For a moment I can shine
Got a grin and a fin that works fine
My fingers are wrinkly and I really don't care!
If all of my curls have curled out of my hair!
For a moment I can feel
All the dreams I've been dreaming are real
Wish my mother could hear it
The sea is my song
For a moment
Just a moment
I belong
Ariel:
I will find you, my darling
And the moment that I do
I'll hold you close my Melody
And sing the song of the sea with you
Ariel: Sing the s
